As a cost-effective way to train employees and share knowledge, E-learning plays an important part in cross-cultural training among multinational corporations. E-learning includes numerous types of media that deliver text, audio, images, animation and streaming video, and includes technology applications and processes such as audio or video tape, satellite TV, CD-ROM and computer-based learning, as well as local intranet/extranet and web-based learning.
Rendering e-learning courses from one language into another is more than just translating. Appropriate tool and expertise is required for localization of e-learning courses. In addition, every culture and language has a unique system of signs and languages and successful localization of e-learning courses involves culture adaptation. For example, even within Chinese speaking regions, Hong Kong and mainland China use different vocabularies. “Strawberry” should be translated as “士多啤梨”, which is phonetically translated and sounds similar to the English word. However, in mainland China, people only understand strawberry as “草莓”(tsau– may). It is important to have in-country reviewers to make sure all the visual and text contents are culturally appropriate and understandable to the target audience.
At MTS, we have the expertise, experience and tools to help you localize your e-learning programs into any language and have it ready for your international audience.
